Forms of Anxiety

Anxiety can manifest in various forms, each with its own unique symptoms and triggers. Some common types of anxiety disorders include:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Individuals with GAD experience excessive and uncontrollable worry about a wide range of everyday concerns, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as muscle tension, headaches, and difficulty sleeping.

  • Panic Disorder: Panic Disorder is characterized by recurrent panic attacks and sudden episodes of intense fear or discomfort that peak within minutes. These attacks can be accompanied by physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness.

  • Social Anxiety Disorder: Social Anxiety Disorder involves an intense fear of social situations and interactions, leading to avoidance behavior and significant distress. Individuals with social anxiety may fear judgment or embarrassment in social settings, making it challenging to form and maintain relationships.

  • Phobias: Phobias are irrational and excessive fears of specific objects, situations, or activities. Common phobias include fear of heights (acrophobia), fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia), and fear of spiders (arachnophobia). Avoidance of the phobic stimulus is a hallmark feature of phobias.

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD): OCD is characterized by intrusive thoughts or obsessions that lead to repetitive behaviors or compulsions aimed at reducing anxiety. These compulsions can temporarily alleviate distress but often result in significant impairment in daily functioning.

Treatment Options

At Sienna Psychology, we offer comprehensive treatment plans tailored to meet your unique needs. Our evidence-based approaches aim to address the root causes of anxiety and equip you with the tools to manage and reduce symptoms effectively. Treatment options may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is a proven therapeutic approach that helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with anxiety. Through structured sessions, you'll learn practical strategies to reframe your thinking and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT is a mindfulness-based therapy that encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings rather than trying to control or suppress them. Through ACT, you'll learn to identify your values and commit to living a meaningful life, even in the presence of anxiety.

  • Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Learning to cultivate mindfulness and engage in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety by promoting a sense of calm and emotional balance.
